Giant Lifebuoy University Medical Centre Freiburg

Freiburg / Baden-Württemberg / Germany

The Munich artist Gregor Passens won the artistic competition for the new building of the University Hospital in Freiburg / Baden Württemberg with his design of an oversized lifebuoy. After extensive research, he came across our manufactory and commissioned atlantics to realise this extraordinary sculpture. The oversized lifebuoy bears the name “Freischwimmer”. It was made of stainless steel and painted a typical white colour with a red life-saving cross. With a tube diameter of 1.40 metres, a total external diameter of the ring of 8.50 metres and a lifeline over 20 metres long, it is probably currently the largest lifebuoy in the world. With its direct connection to the emergency room and the helipad on the roof, it symbolises the hospital’s constant readiness for action. The ring is visible from every point on the main corridor, from the footbridges and from the inner courtyard and thus helps visitors to find their way around the hospital grounds. Visitors can also experience the sculpture directly by walking through it. If you are also looking for a reliable partner to realise similar creative ideas, we look forward to hearing from you!
